Established in 1855 by the town of Prairie City, the Prairie City Cemetery is one of Douglas County's oldest continuously operated cemeteries, with its first recorded burial occurring on August 2, 1856. Originally founded to serve the early settlers of the Kansas Territory, the cemetery remains open to the public and, along with the adjoining Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, stands as the final surviving landmark of the ghost town Prairie City township.
Visitors enter through a gate donated by Mrs. Lola Dyer in 1959, which serves both cemeteries. Since 1879, the grounds have been managed by the Prairie City Cemetery Association (PCCA), an independent not-for-profit organization with no ties to any church or government entity. While the Prairie City Cemetery shares a common entrance gate with Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, the two function as separate organizations under different management.
While the cemetery has a historical legacy, its early archival records were unfortunately destroyed in a fire during the 1930s so not all burials before this time are known.
