This Orthodox Jewish burial ground was in use in the early 1880s although the State of Texas did not approve a charter for a Synagogue and cemetery, originally named Sharis Israel, until 1886 and land was purchased by the congregation for the cemetery in 1887. Over the next three decades, the congregation changed its name to Shaareth Israel (1917), then to Shearith Israel (1936) and purchased additional land for the cemetery. Many early 20th century Dallas-area death certificates referred to this cemetery as White Rock Cemetery due to its eastern border on White Rock Creek.
Located near Fair Park, this location is rich with Shearith Israel and Dallas history. The cemetery was opened in the late 1800s and is maintained to this day by Congregation Shearith Israel (founded in 1884).
Take Central Expressway (I-75) south past downtown Dallas to I-30 east (284-A).
Go east (left) on I-30 and exit at Dolphin Road (exit 49B).
Turn south (right) on Dolphin Road approximately 0.8 miles.
The cemetery will be on your left.
Hours:
Opens at 7:00 am - Sunday through Friday
Closes at 4:00 pm on Friday
Closes at 5:00 pm - Sunday through Thursday
Closed all day on Saturday and on Jewish Holidays
