South Cemetery
Also known as South 9th Cemetery
Osage City, Osage County, Kansas, USA
The South Cemetery (also called Dog, Lincoln, South 9th) was part of the Henry Martin farm before the establishment of Osage City. It was sold to the Osage City Cemetery Association for $1.00 in 1874 (originally filed in 1871).
The last recorded burial was in 1937. There is no known plot map or record of burial locations, hence the discontinuation of burials.
Many founding members of Osage City, Civil War veterans, notable citizens, a Kansas State Senator, and many sons and daughters to someone, are buried here.
For many years the cemetery was left unattended. The tombstones were knocked over and most of them were buried in the dirt. In the past few years, volunteers have made attempts to clean up the cemetery and reset some headstones.
In early 2024 an agreement was reached between the Osage County Historical Society and the City of Osage City to begin an aggressive and focused restoration of the cemetery.
