Add PhotosOak Wood Cemetery (often listed as "Oakwood Cemetery") is the historic municipal cemetery serving Pella and the surrounding Lake Prairie Township in Marion County, Iowa. Located on Columbus Street just north of downtown Pella, the grounds provide a peaceful, well-maintained resting place for generations of local families and many of the town's earliest settlers.
The cemetery dates to the mid-19th century and occupies land that was part of the earliest settlement area of Pella; early accounts note that portions of the town's first settlement (once called "Strooijstadt" or "Strawtown") were located in the northwest section of what later became the cemetery grounds. Oak Wood contains a large number of interments that reflect Pella's Dutch-American heritage and the community's growth over more than a century.
Among those buried here is Henry P. Scholte, the Dutch pastor and leader who guided the founding of Pella, along with many other local civic leaders, veterans, and family plots that tell the story of the town's development. The cemetery's proximity to Central College and the Pella historic district makes it a visible reminder of the town's history and continuity.
Visitors will find marked drives and parking on Columbus Street; for burial, genealogy, or plot information, local funeral homes and county cemetery resources are the best first contacts. Oak Wood's Find A Grave listing contains hundreds of memorials and photographs for people researching family history.
