Gable Cemetery
Prague, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, USA
Gable Cemetery is located one mile north the county line but many people from neighboring Pottawatomie and nearby Seminole Counties are buried here. It was located on the edge of the old pioneer community of Bellemont and created from land on the Gable family farm. Gable Cemetery was often referred interchangeably in area newspapers as being in Bellemont (Belmont, Bellmont), Payson, Gable, Johnson, Meeker, and Prague. Today, it lies between Meeker and Prague. While the official location on Findagrave denotes Prague, a GPS search will state it is in Meeker since it is 7.5 miles from Meeker and 9.2 miles from Prague. The location is very rural and requires traveling down a dirt road.
Burials began in 1893 with the first burial being Danny Garrett who was the grandson of William H. Gable. Mr. Gable donated two acres of land from his farm for the cemetery and it was later expanded to more than 3 acres. In 1938, Dorothy McDowell McConnel facilitated the erection of a one room building known as McConnel Chapel in honor of her husband, John William Mcconnel, and little daughter, Lillian Dorothy, who are buried in the cemetery. This beautiful rock building still stands although it is not currently in use. In the past it was used as a chapel, a schoolhouse, and for many other community events. There is also a large memorial located in the cemetery honoring the McConnel family.
