Phebe Ann Post, daughter of Jacob Post, Sr. and Jannetie Nevius, grew up in a large family on the western shore of Owasco Lake in Cayuga Co., New York, where her father was a Farmer and Tanner. She married James I. Chamberlain, son of John Chamberlain, Sr. and Susan Lovell, on 14 February 1849 at Mount Morris, Livingston Co., New York. Phebe and James were censused at Nunda, Livingston Co., New York in 1850 and at Alabama, Genesee Co., New York in 1860. They had a son, Otto Chamberlain (1853-1865). Not long after their son's death, Phebe and James separated or divorced, with James said to have eloped with Phebe's niece, Sarah E. Whipple. James and Sarah subsequently removed to Georgia while Phebe returned to the Town of Fleming, Cayuga Co., New York where she lived with relatives for the remainder of her life.
FAMILY DOUBLY AFFLICTED. Death of Mrs. Helen Peterson Followed by That of Her Sister, Mrs. Phoebe Chamberlain. The Peterson family of the town of Fleming will have the sympathies of the community in their double grief. Helen, widow of Cornelius Peterson, died Saturday evening, while her sister Mrs. Phoebe Chamberlain, in another apartment was in a very serious condition. Sunday afternoon shortly before 5 o'clock Mrs. Chamberlain died. Mrs. Peterson died of organic heart disease and Mrs. Chamberlain, of bronchitis, old age contributing. They were daughters of Jacob and Jane Post and Mrs. Peterson had always lived on the farm where she died, having been born there. Mrs. Chamberlain resided for some years at Batavia, but for the past 30 years has resided on the lake shore in the Peterson neighborhood. Mrs. Peterson had been in poor health for a number of years and bore her affliction with Christian fortitude, cheerfulness and patience. Both were well known and highly respected and their deaths so near to each other will be a shock to many. Mrs. Peterson is survived by eight children, five daughters, Miss P[h]oebe Peterson, of Fleming, Mrs. Howard Tryon, of Fleming, Mrs. Edwin Ball, of Sennett, Mrs. William Ball, of Weedsport, Mrs. Nellie Post, of Auburn, and three sons, Christopher and George, of Fleming, and Schuyler, of Port Byron. The funeral services will be held at the Peterson family home on the Owasco lake road Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. and the burials will be in Sand Beach cemetery."
