The possible death year of 1873 was submitted by Mary Everett—without requested source data—incorrect as Mary "Polly" Brown is on later census records.
Note: This is not the Mary Brown (b Jan 1833) who married Horatio Ford, as someone had suggested to me (be aware the two ladies are about 3 years apart in age and lived in Georgia)—-Also, earlier contributor suggested 'Hunter' as her married name which is also incorrect. Mary's sister, Sarah, was the wife of Charley Hunter.
She first appears on the Census in 1850 with her parents, (Milton and Kizziah Brown), and siblings living in
District 85, Union, Georgia, USA.
Prior to that, the family lived in Cherokee County, NC where her father, Milton Brown, was listed as head of household in 1840. Mary would have been about 10 years old then.
In 1860 the family are enumerated in the Census in Brasstown (Post Office), Towns County, Georgia. Mary was listed 28 and single then.
The 1870 Census records her with her parents and sister Caroline; there is one more man in the home listed as a domestic servant (White). The home is in Brasstown Township (Post Office is Hayesville), Clay County, NC. Mary is listed as "Polly Brown' at age 35; she is single.
Mary's father passed away in 1878; the 1880 Census lists Mary Brown, single, age 45 living with her widowed mother 'Kizzy Brown," age 74. The two have moved back to Georgia, living in Brasstown, Towns County, Georgia.
47178196): In the 1880 census her marital state is checked as Single. In the 1880 census, the household was interviewed on 16 Jun 1880. Many trees carry a death for Kizziah as 16 Jun 1880 which I [GF] believe is a corruption of a tree that used "After 16 Jun 1880" for her death date. Ancestry.com drops date prefixes when it presents a date (About, Before, After and their standard abbreviations) so someone who doesn't look at the details on the tree they're copying just gets the date. Note from Gerald Fling (
Note from MountainLinks: Tombstone has 1880 as death date of 1880. So it is assumed Kizziah passed after that Census but the same year.
Mary appears in the 1900 Census, living in the household of her sister Elizabeth Brown Self's family; this home was located in Brasstown, Towns County, Georgia. Mary was still single, her name listed as "Mary Brown." She was listed as a 'boarder' and age 70. Her birth date in the 1900 census was given as May 1830. The 1900 Census marks how many children and how many living children for each mother. Mary's portion was blank, meaning she had no children. This is good to know so researchers do not get her confused with others by same maiden name.
