Mrs. Melvina DeShazo Pointer of Parkville, Md., formerly of Person County, N.C., died Sunday, August 4, in Baltimore, Md. at the age of 78.
She was born April 22, 1935 to the late Mr. John Herbert DeShazo and Mrs. Alberta Carrington DeShazo. Mrs. Pointer was married to the late Mr. Leonard William Pointer and was a member of Mason Chapel Baptist Church, and upon moving to Baltimore, she joined Shepherd Community Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Keena Leonarda Robinson of Baltimore; two sons, Mr. Darryl Leonard Pointer and wife Jacqueline of Baltimore and Mr. Andre Charles Pointer of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters-in-law, Ms. Jeanette Harris, Ms. Lena Rhames, Ms. Redessa Taylor and Mrs. Rosa Lee Barnett and husband Cortez; one brother-in-law, Mr. Zollie Pointer and wife Willa; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, one daughter, Mrs. Sheena Melvina Lucas; one grandchild, Ms. Yvette Gordon; and five brothers, Charles, James, Mr. Sidney, Alonzer and Alexander DeShazo, also preceded Mrs. Pointer in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m. at Greater Brandon Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Andrew Ferges officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the residence of Ms. Lena Rhames, 2111 Pointer Road, Alton. Public viewing will be Friday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
