He was born Dec. 4, 1941, in Menomonie, the son of Irvin and Carol (Killian) Diffendorfer. He graduated from Menomonie High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
On Jan. 14, 1961, he married Jane McLeod in Menomonie. After living in surrounding communities in southern Minnesota, they made their home in Owatonna in 1972.
David worked for the Crenlo Corporation for several years and then began a 28-year career at Modern Metal Products (formerly Muckle Mfg.), ending in March 2000. David then obtained his real estate license and worked for ERA Gillespie Real Estate.
David was active in the Park and Recreation League, City League, and high school sports as an umpire, referee and coach. He was also a member of the Eagles Club and participated in many activities, including the pancake breakfasts. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler. David served as president of the Owatonna Coin and Stamp Club.
Anyone who knew "Diff" was aware of his very enthusiastic support of the Green Bay Packers. He was the ultimate "Packer Backer." "Diff" was an avid fisherman and a charter captain on Lake Michigan for eight years aboard the McAdoo with co-captain Jeff McKay. He was a coin and sports card collector for many years, finding enjoyment in organizing coin shows and inspiring interest in coin and card collecting. "Diff" found great pleasure in wildflower gardening and bird feeding. He was also an amateur photographer for much of his life.
David is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jane; two daughters, Cheryl Diffendorfer of Rochester, Minn., and Cindy (Frank) Green of Ellendale, Minn.; two sons, Tim Diffendorfer of International Falls, Minn., and Brian Diffendorfer (Shandra Saufferer) of Owatonna; his mother, Carol Diffendorfer; a sister, Julie Falkner (Steve Hall); two brothers, Michael (Delphine) Diffendorfer and Randy (Gretchen) Diffendorfer; nine grandchildren, Justin, Keslie, Maison, Nicholas, Nicole, Braeden, Spencer, Casey and Jessalyn; special family members, Amy Honsey, Tammy Welk, Dennie Faulker and Doug Kleeberger; and companion, Sadie.
David was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Irvin; and two brothers, James and Larry.
Visitation was held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna, and is scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie.
