Little is known of his childhood only the census details that show detail of his brothers and sisters, but it appears that he followed in his fathers footsteps and grew up to be an Agricultural Labourer and was employed around the border of Oxfordshire and Gloustershire.

At this time it should be noted that a small hamlet called Clapton is located within a 20 kilometre circle of a number of places that will be mentioned in this narrative. Whilst it is not anyway conclusive it could be that the family name would have been derived from this area many generations prior as this was one of the practices used when surnames became a requirement.

The census of 1841 of the Parish of SHIPTON under WYCHWOOD - Township of LYNEHAM has the following entry:-

Editors Notes

1) Care should be taken in regard to ages given as in this census ages were generally "rounded" and places of birth were not always accurate.

2) No other Claptons &/or Paintings were noted in Lyneham.

From this record is can be established that Charles had not yet married Sarah Painting his first wife.

Actually it was on the 14th August 1841 that Charles was to marry Sarah Painting at the Parish Church, Parish of SHIPTON (refer Certificate of Marriage).

The parish church is more formally known as:-
