WILLIAM VIPOND MISSING
He entered the desert several weeks ago, since which time nothing has been heard of him in Butte – He is probably safe.
Vipond's Friends Anxious
There are several men in Butte who would like to know what has become of William C. Vipond, who left Butte about a year and a half ago to try his luck in the Goldfield and other Southern Nevada mining districts. Up to a few weeks ago Mr. Vipond corresponded regularly with some of his Butte friends, and kept them posted on his movements, but recently nothing has been heard from him, and his friends are beginning to feel anxious about him. When last heard from he was at a place called Bishop, which is near the desert. He was then resting his pack animals preparatory to entering the desert in search of mineral.
Old-Time Miner.
Mr. Vipond is one of the men who discovered the Vipond district in Beaverhead county, the other discoverer being his brother John, who was killed by a Mexican murderer a few years ago while prospecting in new Mexico. He is an old prospector and miner, and is so thoroughly familiar with outdoor life that those who know him well do not anticipate that even the desert could get away with him. He was one of the early-day placer miners in the Black Hills, going there in 1875, a year before the great stampede began. His last work in Montana was that of driving the long tunnel on the Mountain View property in Bear gulch, Madison county. This property is owned by Dr. J. C Johnson and his brother, Alexander. Prior to that he had charge of the Mussigbrod mines near Garnet.
