James M. Merideth was in Augusta, Illinois, last week to attend the funeral of his mother, who was one of the pioneers of Hancock county, having resided there for 76 years. The Augusta Eagle said of her death:
"Alzina Merideth, daughter of Joshua and Sophia Hobart, was born in Alleghany county, New York, December 20, 1830, and died at her late home in Augusta, Illinois, January 26, 1910.
The deceased was brought to this country by her parents, when but three years of age. She spent her girlhood days in Carthage, and remembered vividly many of the thrilling events of the Mormon trouble, and often related happenings of those early times.
She united with the Christian church in April 1867, and up to the time of her death, almost 43 years, lived a faithful Christian life, devoted to her church, her home, her family; thus she lived, thus she died: respected, loved, missed and mourned.
She was married to John J. Merideth, October 4th, 1849, who preceded her in death two years ago. To this union were born ten children, all of whom are living except one which died in infancy.
The living are five sons and four daughters, namely: Charles W., Thomas J., Frank E., John C., of Augusta; and James M. of Keokuk Iowa, and Mesdames: Mosalta Wier, Chicago; Maria Carter of Quincy; Ella Majors of Plymouth; and Luda Manuel of Alberta, Canada.
There is also one sister, and two brothers: Paula Vest of Colchester; and John C. Hobart, Falls City Nebraska; and Edwin L. Hobart, Denver Colorado.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Christian church, conducted by Reverend E. M. Morgan of Minonk, Illinois. Interment in Augusta cemetery."
