Patrick Keane was the son of Patrick Keane and Sarah Carrigan. The family was from Kilrea, County Derry (Londonderry), Northern Ireland. When Patrick was young his parents moved their family of 6 children from Kilrea to Glasgow Scotland where they first appear in the 1851 Glasgow census. They probably moved to Glasgow because of the Great Famine that occurred in Ireland during the late 1840's.
Patrick Keane's siblings: Mary, Edward, Margaret, Michael and Sarah (Patrick was born after Edward).
In 1851, at about age 20, Patrick Keane visited the United States for the first time, then returned to Glasgow Scotland where he and his brothers Edward and Michael learned their glassworks trade. Edward was a glass maker. Michael was a glass cutter and learned his trade at James Couper and Sons Glass Works in Glasgow. The Keane's lived near St. Rollox Glassworks in Glasgow, Patrick may have learned glass cutting and engraving from St. Rollox Glassworks.
January 28, 1859 Patrick Keane married Margaret McWade at St. Paul's (St Machan's) Catholic Church in Campsie/Lennoxtown, Scotland (10 miles north of Glasgow). As an engagement gift, Patrick presented Margaret with an Edinburgh cut glass goblet engraved with her initials "M McW" and forget-me-not clovers. This goblet is an exquisite example of Scottish crystal glassware (see photo collection).

Patrick was listed in the 1870 New Bedford census as Patrick Kean, age 37, born Ireland, works in glass works. Michael was listed as Michael Kane, age 26, born Ireland, works in glass works.
1871
31 July 1871, Patrick Keane purchased his home at 41 Wing Street in New Bedford from James H. Tripp, a local grocer and land owner. 41 Wing Street would become home to several generations of Patrick Keane's family. The home was demolished in the late 1950's after his daughter Mary Keane moved from 41 Wing Street to a retirement home in Fairhaven MA.
1874
4 December 1875, Patrick became a naturalized citizen of the United States: Certificate No. (Volume or Page number) 70-100 U.S. District Court Boston Mass. Place of birth: Kilrea Ireland
Date of birth: 17 March 1832
Address in 1875: New Bedford

Joseph 4
Annie Dooley 35 sister-in-law
(Michael was probably working for Meriden Flint Glass Co)
1885
By 1885, Patrick Keane established his glass cutting business as "P. Keane Glass Cutter" on the second floor of the New Bedford Foundry building located at 272 South Water Street New Bedford. He maintained his glass cutting shop at this location until his retirement in 1907.
1887
The New Bedford directory listed Patrick Keane as proprietor of a saloon at 15 Howland Street New Bedford, located just down the street from his house on Wing street, and glass cutting studio on south Water Street.
1890s
In the late 1890's Patrick Keane exhibited his cut glasswork at an industrial exhibition on Weld Street in New Bedford.
During his career, Patrick Keane created his own patterns and among his clients he did cutglass work for the royal of Japan.
In 1907, after fifty years in the trade as a Brilliant Period cutglass artisan, Patrick Keane retired. His retirement story appeared in the New Bedford newspaper in 1907.
December 30th, 1908, Patrick Keane died at his home from complications of old age. He was laid to rest at his family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dartmouth Massachusetts, having lived a full life.
The Keane family was fond of music and theater and were known to act on stage in New Bedford. Daughter Josephine was an accomplished pianist who taught piano and played in theaters during the silent film era. daughter Sarah sang and played piano. There was also a violinist in the family who's unnamed photo remains as a testament to the Keane family's love of music and the arts.
The following article regarding the retirement of Patrick Keane was originally printed in New Bedford Massachusetts about 1907. It was reprinted again in 1957 in the Standard Times column titled "50 Years Ago" (Thank you Joan Barney, New Bedford Public Library, for discovering this article):
"P. Keane, Glass Cutter" was the sign that directed attention to the place of business of Patrick Keane on the second floor of the building at the southeast corner of Coffin and South Water Streets. Now after 50 years in following the trade of a glass cutter, Mr. Keane was retiring.
Among Mr. Keane's contemporaries was George T. Thatcher, who set up in business on purchase Street in 1890. He was later joined by his brother, Richard Thatcher, and when the business was moved to 2d Street it was conducted under the name of Thatcher Brothers. The next move was to Fairhaven in 1894 when a factory was erected on the west side of Main Street, where the business continued. The product was known as Diamond Finish Cut Glass.
Mr. Keane was born in the north of Ireland in 1835 and later moved to Glasgow in Scotland where he learned his trade. He came to the United States in 1851 and was first employed at his trade in Boston, working for William Libbie. After Mr. Libbie acquired the Mt. Washington Glass Works in New Bedford Mr. Keane moved to New Bedford in 1871 and was employed here by that concern. He remained with Mt. Washington Glass Works until 1885, in which year he established his own business (end of Patrick Keane retirement article).
