John Garrett Slusser was born on December 19, 1864 in Indiana. His father William W. Slusher was from Pennsylvania and a Farmer. His mother Martha Jane Sloan Slusher was from Indiana and Kept House. He was the first born. His siblings are Mary E. (1867 – 1916); George F. (1869 – 1929); Henry B. (1871 – 1908); Loraine Myriam (1874 – 1945); and James Ward (1876 – 1929).
1880 Census show John G. as "Farm Laborer." Living with his family in Wilson County, Kansas.
On September 23, 1883 John G. (Age 19), marries Mary E. Cook (Age 16), in Anderson County, Kansas.
October 28, 1892 his mother, Martha Jane Slusher passes away , Anderson, Kansas, she was 49.
1900 Census shows John G. and family now living in Hamilton County, Indiana. Children are Robert R.
born in 1883 (Kansas) and now 16 (At School); Bessie Irene, born in 1886 (Kansas) and now 13 (At School); Henry, born in 1890 (Kansas) and now 9 (At School); Leah born in 1894 (Indiana) and now 6; Neva born in 1896 (Indiana) and now 4; Brother James W. (Glass Factory) and sister Loraine (Seamstress) is also living with them.
John G. "Occupation" is "Agent – Patent Medicine." Around the 1900s, "patent medicines" were unregulated, non-prescription "cure-all" concoctions (elixirs, tonics, pills) sold as remedies for nearly any ailment, containing secret formulas often loaded with alcohol, opiates, or cocaine, and promoted through aggressive advertising and medicine shows before federal regulation in 1906 curbed their dangerous claims. Despite their name, most weren't patented; they just had trademarked names and flashy labels, making them popular but often ineffective or harmful.
1910 Census shows John G. now living in Nez Perce County, Lewiston, Idaho, working as "Sawyer" in "Sawmill" with Mary E. as wife. Daughters Bessie Irene, "Department Store." Leah V, Neva L. and Hassel I., in same household.
1930 Census shows John G. now living in Benewah County, Idaho and "Occupation" is now "Farmer." Mary E. is wife. No other individuals are living with them.
Circa 1936, John G. Slusser, was admitted to the Eastern State Psychiatric Hospital, located in Medical Lake, Washington.
May 25, 1939 Mary E. Cook Slusser passes away at Sacred Heart Hospital, Spokane, Washington at the age of 71. "Occupation" was "housewife" with 55 years spent in this "Occupation."
1940 Census shows John G. Slusser living at the Eastern State Hospital, Spokane, Washington. He is shown as an inmate and 75 years old. See letter in Photos concerning this hospital.
John G. Garrett passes away 10 April, 1949 (age 83). Death certificate indicates that his length of stay at the Eastern State Hospital had been 13 years, 2 months and 10 days. Life "Occupation" shown as "Filer & Sawyer" with "Industry" listed as "Lumber Co. & Farmer."

Gravesite Details
Lewiston Normal Hill Cemetery and Arboretum has been in continuous operation since the late 19th Century. There are over 19,000 people buried at the cemetery, which covers more than 40 acres. There is also a State Tree Grove located in the cemetery.
