SP5 John M. Ekstadt was a photographer from Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 69th Signal Battalion, 160th Signal Group, 1st Signal Brigade, U.S. Army, Republic of Vietnam.
In late November 1967, SP5 Ekstadt was assigned temporary duty to the 43rd Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) Battalion. On November 25th, he was returning from an NCO Club aboard a landing craft to the main boat in Dinh Tuong Province, RVN, when he slipped while boarding the main boat. Ekstadt fell into the water and was drowned.
