Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at Covenant Missionary Baptist Church conducted by Rev. James B. Lewis. Burial follows at Morning Glory Cemetery. Visitation will take place in the sanctuary of the church on Wednesday from noon until the time of service.
Mrs. McKenzie was born September 29, 1931, in Mullins, a daughter of Inez M. Crawford and Herbert F. Lewis . Both parents and her siblings, Maycie Hodge and Joseph Crawford, all predeceased her.
She was a 1949 graduate of Palmetto High School and In 1953 was awarded the Bachelor of Science Degree from Morris College, Sumter. In that same year she began what would be a thirty-three year teaching career with the School District of Georgetown County.
From June 28, 1954, until his death on September 14, 1990, she abided in holy matrimony with Alvin Russell McKenzie Jr. They shared life, love, and births and rearing of four beloved children.
Mrs. McKenzie’s journey with Christ began at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Mullins. Having moved to Georgetown she Joined Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church and was active with the Trustee Board, Mary Aaron Auxiliary, Brown Duncan Club, Beautification Club and the Pulpit Aide Board. In recent years she was a member of Covenant Missionary Baptist Church and was active in service there as well. In 2003 the church honored her as Mother of the Year and she served as Chairperson of the Trustee’s Ministry until her death.
Her community affiliations included the city of Georgetown Economic Development Commission and the Georgetown Clean City Committee, the Georgetown Housing Authority Board, the Georgetown County Education Association, the Georgetown County Retired Teachers’ Association. She was an avid supporter of the Girl Scouts of America, was a member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Inc. the Sisterhood of the United Order of Tents.
Surviving are four children, Alvin Russell McKenzie III of Charlotte, NC, Renee’ V. McKenzie of Georgetown, Ronald E. McKenzie of Raleigh, NC, and Walter E. McKenzie of Seattle, WA; and a beloved cousin Betty Chestnut of Myrtle Beach.
