Nathaniel Sharp may have served in the Mexican War; he was ranching in Calabasas, Arizona, by 1856. In 1861, Sharp headed for New Mexico to enlist in the Confederate Army. He served in Helm's Company, Herbert's Arizona Battalion.
After the War, Sharp worked as a lawyer in Sacramento, California, but returned to Arizona in 1869. He helped dig the Tempe Canal and started a cattle ranch south of the Salt River. He married a widow, Emeline Stickney, in Pinal County in 1878.
In 1883, the couple sold their ranch near Phoenix and moved to another on the Verde River. Emeline died in 1904 and was buried in Rosedale Cemetery. Sharp himself was living in Los Angeles when he died in 1906. His remains were returned to Phoenix by rail for interment in Rosedale.
