Artist, Author. He gave birth to the Pop Art movement, and his paintings of the Campbell's soup cans brought him to the attention of the art world. Born, raised and schooled in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Carpathian immigrant parents from Slovakia. He received his drawing skills and training from Carnegie Institute of Technology, then moved to New York City, gaining success as a commercial artist. He set up a building where he manufactured his art and filmed movies, a place known as 'The Factory.' It was here he came close to death when mentally unbalanced Valerie Solanas came to this location in 1969 and shot him in the chest but he survived. In the last two years of his life, he made over 100 paintings, drawings, and prints based on Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. This art revealed the secret side of Warhol, his lifelong church attendance and personal piety. A hereditary gallbladder disease was passed onto Andy Warhol through his father. After complications from gallbladder surgery at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center, he died at the age of 58. His body was shipped back to Castle Shannon for burial where a funeral Mass was celebrated at St. John Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church. A later memorial service was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral attended by over 2,000 people. The Andy Warhol Museum opened in Pittsburgh in 1994, which was the site selected by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to issue a 37-cent commemorative stamp in 2002, featuring a self-portrait of Andy Warhol. On March 10, 2021, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission approved a new Pennsylvania Historical Marker in his honor.
