Sister Rose Schimizzi, M.P.F. Educator and member of Religious Teachers Filippini Sister Rose Schimizzi, MPF, a member of the Religious Teachers Filippini, died peacefully after a long illness on Thursday, March 19, 2015, in Saint Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, Morristown, N.J., at the age of 92.
The wake for Sister Rose will be held on Monday, March 23, 2015, from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4 p.m. at the Saint Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh, Morristown, N.J. The celebrant and homilist is Rev. Jeffrey Lee, pastor of Saint Mary Parish, Colts Neck, N.J. Interment will take place at Ave Maria Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Doyle Funeral Home, Morristown.
Sister Rose was born and raised in Watkins Glen, N.Y. She entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1940, received her habit in 1941, and made her religious profession in 1944. She was a member of the community for 73 years. Sister Rose was awarded a B.S. degree in elementary education from St. John University, Cleveland, Ohio, and a M.A. from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J. Sr. Rose served in education as a teacher, and later as a principal. She taught in the following schools: Holy Rosary, Jersey City, N.J.; Our Lady of Pompei, Baltimore, Md.; St. Mary of Mt. Virgin, New Brunswick, N.J.; St. Joseph, Hammonton, N.J.; Holy Redeemer, Cleveland, Ohio; Purification, Ellwood City, Pa.; St. Anthony, Akron, Ohio; St. Anthony, Bristol, Conn.; Holy Trinity, Long Branch, N.J., and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Orange, N.J. Sr. Rose was the principal at Queen of Peace, Maywood, N.J.; Most Holy Rosary, Perth Amboy, N.J.; St. Ann, Hoboken, N.J.; Our Lady of Libera, West New York, N.J.; St. Cecilia, Iselin, N.J., and St. Lucy Filippini Academy, Newark, N.J. In addition, Sr. Rose served as superior of St. Mary of Mt. Virgin, New Brunswick, N.J.; Our Lady Queen of Peace, Maywood, N.J.; Most Holy Rosary, Perth Amboy, N.J.; and St. Cecilia, Iselin, N.J.
Sr. Rose retired at Villa Walsh in 2007, and became a resident at St. Joseph Hall Infirmary in 2011. Sr. Rose's greatest asset was her willingness to serve in any capacity that fulfilled the mission of the Community. Her legacy is her spirit of generosity and service.
Sr. Rose was the daughter of the late Francis Schimizzi and Frances (Calabria) Schimizzi, and the sister of brothers, Dominic Schimizzi of Watkins Glen, N.Y. and Rev. Pasquale Schimizzi, S.A.C., and sisters, Pauline Henderson, Elizabeth Sabatini, Josephine Schimizzi of Watkins Glen, N.Y., and Sister Mary Schimizzi, M.P.F. She is survived by her beloved sister, Sister Catherine Schimizzi, M.P.F., who is assigned at Villa Walsh.
