CIVIL WAR VETERAN

Served in the 1st Regiment, Corps of Engineers, Regular Army, and was a Lieutenant in the 97th Regiment Colored Infantry.

Obituary:

CASSIUS M. FERNALD-Funeral services for Cassius M. Fernald were held at Oakland Cemetery, St. Paul, yesterday afternoon, Rev. George Smith, of the Church of St. John the Baptist, officiating. Mr. Fernald died in Rochester, N.Y., last Saturday. He had been a resident of St. Paul until four years ago. He was prominently identified with the Minnesota commandery of the Loyal Legion, and was a member of Acker Post, G.A.R. Death resulted from a fall last February, but his final sickness covered only the last two months. He is survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter. He was 61 years of age.

Cassius Marcellus Clay Fernald enlisted in the Union Army as a Private. On 7/1/1861 (Estimated date of enlistment) he mustered into "B" Co. US Army 1st Battalion Engineer. He was discharged for promotion and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 8/26/1863 (Estimated date) into "B" Co. US CT 97th Infantry. He was transferred within his Regiment from company B to company D.
