Deceased Name: Luther Freng
Luther Freng, 77, of La Crosse, died on Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. He was born on July 7, 1923, in the town of Farmington, Wis., to Ingvald and Marie (Petersen) Freng. On Sept. 27, 1947, he married Jennie Johnson in La Crosse.
Luther was a United States Army Veteran of WWII, serving with the 423rd Infantry as a medic. He became a prisoner of war on Dec. 19, 1944, when he was captured at the Battle of the Bulge by German forces. He spent five months at Stalag 4B in Germany before being liberated by Russian forces.
Following his discharge, Luther returned to La Crosse where he worked for 35 years at the Trane Co. as an arc welder, retiring on Jan. 1, 1986. Luther enjoyed mowing lawns and clearing snow for others, as well as NASCAR races and playing cards. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as an usher, as well as being a lifetime member of Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 in La Crosse.
In addition to his wife, Jennie, Luther is survived by two children, Linda (Steven) Sorenson of Texarkana, Texas, and Darrel Freng of La Crosse; three grandsons, Robert, James and Dylan; one great-granddaughter, Cassidy; two brothers, Orlen (Mary) Freng of La Valle, Wis., and Clay ton Freng of Rockledge, Fla.; eight sisters, Elsie Anderson of Bangor, Wis., Rosella Erickson, Elvera Anderson, Lorna Kauffman, Doris (Ray) Anderson and Vivian (Martin) Christianson, all of West Salem, Wis., Gloria Cot ton of Titusville, Fla., and Virginia Guenther of St. Paul, Minn., along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, La Vern.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 11 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis C. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Burns Valley Cemetery, rural Bangor, Wis., with military honors provided by Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52. Friends may call on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, and again at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
