Irvin and Luna (Fletcher) are his legal parents. They were his guardians while his mother Pauline C. (Smith) worked to support them after his father Walter A. Battles abandoned them. His mother married Raymond C. Parker who was willing to adopt James, but she decided James would be happier with the Robinsons who adored him than as a stepson.

Before joining the Army, James found and confronted his father and was rejected. After that he legally changed his last name to Robinson on his birth certificate. He served in-country during the Korean War and was severely injured. His name is on the Korean War Memorial in front of City Hall, in Montpelier, Vermont.
