John McGowan

19 August 1874 – 29 May 1950

John McGowan was born on 19 August 1874 at Sebastopol, near Ballarat, Victoria, the son of Arthur McGowan and Mary McGowan (née Hare). His parents were Irish-born Roman Catholics who settled in the Ballarat–Sebastopol district during the late nineteenth century.

John grew up in Victoria and later moved to South Australia, where he established his adult life and raised a large family. By the mid-1890s he was living in the Adelaide metropolitan area, indicating a permanent relocation from Victoria.

Marriage

On 10 June 1895, at just 20 years of age, John married Emily Ada Day at the residence of J. Hancock, Kensington, South Australia. Emily was aged 17 at the time of marriage and was born in Adelaide on 24 July 1879.

Children

John and Emily raised a notably large family, primarily in Brooklyn Park, West Hilton, and New Thebarton, South Australia. Their known children include:

  • John Edward McGowan (1895)
  • Beatrice Ethel McGowan (1898)
  • James Edward McGowan (1901)
  • Joseph Thomas McGowan (1903)
  • Nellie Ada McGowan (1905)
  • Mary Adelaide McGowan (1908)
  • William McGowan (1911)
  • Mavis Emily McGowan (1915)
  • Gladys Jane McGowan (1920), later Gluyas and Whelan

The consistency of birth registrations across multiple suburbs reflects a stable family life within the western Adelaide area over more than two decades.

Later Life and Death

John spent his later years at Brooklyn Park, South Australia. He died there on 29 May 1950, aged 75 years.

Burial

He was buried at West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, in Road 1 South, Path 21, Aspect E-2ND, Site 5, alongside his wife Emily Ada McGowan, who survived him by nineteen years.
