FATHER: Dr. Charles Augustine Davis (1823-1863), who died when Charles Thornton was 3 months old. Dr. Davis was a surgeon at the U.S. Marine Hospital. His father was Robert Davis (1790-1825) and his mother was Almira Brown (Dearborn) Davis, later Evans (1798-1861).
MOTHER: Mary Parker Thornton (1830-1875), a decedent of Matthew Thornton a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Upon Dr. Davis's death, Mary remarried Hon. William Sewall Gardner (1827-1888). Hon. W.S. Gardner was a close family friend. Mary and W.S. Gardner had a daughter, Mary Sewall Gardner (1871-1961), who was 4 years old when her mother died (Charles was 11 or 12 years old). Mary and Charles were then raised by her father (Hon. W.S. Gardner) and his 2nd wife, Sarah M. (Davis) Gardner, who's father was Isaac Davis, an attorney in the Boston area.
