Robert McCall Shell was the son of John Shell Jr. (1779 - 1861) of Lincoln County NC and Margarette McCall (1775 - 1855) of Caldwell County North Carolina. He was the namesake of his maternal grandfather. Robert McCall (1751 - 1819) of County Antrim Ireland, Patriot of the American Revolution who served under General Daniel Morgan.
