Martin Crouse was a member of the Alleghany County Home Guard during the Civil War and was killed in a fight with "bushwhackers" at Killen's Branch.
In October, 1864, a battle between the homeguard and a band of bushwhackers took place on Killians Branch. This was about halfway between the present day Sparta and Gap Civil on the old Mouth of Wilson Road, now Highway 21. Here the homeguard under Capitan J.H. Doughton, who had been wounded at Manassas, Virgina, was ambushed be a band of bushwhackers under Henry Taylor. They were concealed in a dense ivy thicket by the roadside and fired at the homeguard as they were passing. The homeguard promptly returned fire but, as far as we can ascertain, none of the bushwhackers were killed or wounded. Of the homeguard, Felix Reeves was instantly killed and Wiley Maxwell, Martin Crouse, and Jesse Reeves were mortally wounded. This was the last fight of any importance between the outlaws and the homeguard.
