Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 22, 2016 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow and Rev. Lil Johnston will officiate. Burial will follow in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery – Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2016, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Rexwinkel-Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church.
Wendell William Borchers was born July 11, 1930 on the family farm in Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa, the son of William and Hannah (Jacobs) Borchers. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church – Preston Township. He attended country school Preston Township #5 and later high school in Le Mars. He graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1948. Following his schooling, he worked various jobs in Le Mars and Sioux City.
He was united in marriage to Norma Jean Kallsen on November 24, 1950 at St. John’s Lutheran Church – Preston Township. Early on, they lived in Sioux City and Le Mars before moving to the family farm in 1958. He and Norma farmed in Preston Township until they retired. Following retirement, they continued to live on the farm until moving to Le Mars in December of 2014.
Wendell was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church – Preston Township where he taught adult Sunday school and served on church council. After they moved to Le Mars, they were also attending St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Wendell served on the A.S.C.S. County committee for several years. He was an avid bowler and bowled on the Thursday night bowling league in Akron. He also enjoyed golfing in the Monday night league in Akron. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed playing cards and reading, especially the newspaper. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family. He and Norma Jean loved attending all of their children and grandchildren’s activities over the years.
Survivors include his wife of over 65 years, Norma Jean of Le Mars; his children: Dean (Lyn) Borchers of Le Mars, IA, Barry (Vicki) Borchers of Le Mars, and Cheri (Les) Albrecht of Jackson, NE; 11 grandchildren: Roxanne (Jeff) Powell, Christy (Tony) Rangel, Jacob Borchers, Kyle Borchers, Jacci Borchers, Bryan (Ally) Borchers, Scott Borchers (fiancé, Amy Holmstrom), Tyler Borchers, Allie Albrecht, Hannah Albrecht, and Joe Albrecht; 6 great grandchildren: Spencer and Alexa Powell, Jackson and Brooklyn Rangel, Parker Laughton, and Carter Borchers; his sister: Audrey Cole of Henderson, NV; his brother in law: LuVerne Helmrichs of Ireton, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: William and Hannah Borchers; a brother in infancy: Robert Lee Borchers; and a grandson in infancy: Andrew James Borchers.
