John Sember was born in 1912 in a house in the Greenville section of Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, second son of Charles and Anna Sember, both natives of Austria-Hungary, which later became known as Czechoslovakia and is now in an independent Slovakia. According to the 1920 US Census, Charles had immigrated in 1904 and Anna in 1905 and both were naturalized in 1917. Slovak was noted as the language spoken at home.

John had a brother Stephen who passed away in infancy and a second brother named Stephen who became a physiotherapist as well as a sister, Anna, whose married name was Yelanowski. According to the 1930 Census, John was already working at the age of 17 as a machine hand for Western Electric and was later listed as "semiskilled occupations in automobile manufacture".

As a single young man, John earned a living playing baseball for local and minor league baseball teams. He was a member of the Milos, a well-know wrestling club based in Bayonne, New Jersey, securing many medals. John was well known in the local boxing clubs and was nominated to professionally fight against the then World Heavyweight Champion, Joe Louis. According to the Bayonne Times newspaper report, the managers' disagreement ended the nomination.

John enlisted into the US military service on 5 Aug 1942 at Newark, NJ. He served in the Army stationed at Colorado Springs, Coloradp, playing football for the Army Air Corp for the length of his service where he functioned as a wide receiver.

John graduated from Bayonne Vocational High School and Real Estate and Insurance Business School. According to the Genealogy Bank Historical Newspaper Obituaries, John worked at the time of death as a realtor and insurance salesman. He lived at 73 Bowers Street and 310 Van Winkle Avenue, Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. John had two children, adopting his wife's daughter, Margaret Ann, and had one natural son, John James Sember.
