Jackowski, Shirley 90, of Schererville and East Chicago, passed away peacefully and happily surrounded by family and friends on October 21, 2013. A native of New Orleans, Shirley is survived by five children, Jacklyn (Roger) Baker of Schererville, Sister Karol Jackowski of New York City, Debra (Joseph) Seremet of Schererville, Henry Jackowski Jr. of Merrillville, and David Jackowski of Portage. Surviving her also are 8 loving grandchildren and 5 really great great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her husband, Henry Jackowski of East Chicago. Shirley spent her early married life in East Chicago working at the Normal Bakery, the family owned business. She also enjoyed a successful career at the AT&T Hammond Service Center with many of her co-workers becoming lifelong friends. Not only is she the adored matriarch of the Jackowski family, but Shirley is the last surviving member of the Cher Amies a fun-loving group of 9 women who met monthly for cocktails and cards. In her retirement, Shirley became an avid reader of romance novels (member of the Danielle Steele Fan Club), a proficient worker of crossword puzzles (including the New York Times), a dedicated watcher of the Food Network, and a lover of Krispy Kremes and Strack's sour cream donuts. Throughout her life Shirley was well known for an unfailing sense of humor, endless love of a good time, and a divine ability to judge no one. Family, friends, food and drink were among her greatest joys. In honoring Shirley's request for no funeral or memorial service, her body will be cremated and, as she wished, her life will be celebrated with a "Shirlapalooza" a party for family, friends and all who knew and loved her on Sunday, October 27th from 1:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. in the Casa Maria Hall at St. Maria Goretti, Dyer.
