Born and baptized in Quebec, he married Marie Verance Peltier in 1839, and had one child in Canada before coming to the states. They settled in Milford, MA, and later Haverhill, and had 9 children. Hilaire worked as a carpenter until he was in his 90s. He died at the age of 99 two weeks after a fall down the stairs at St. Joseph's Church. A contemporary newspaper article called him "the oldest resident of this city, and one of the oldest men in New England". (Boston Post, Apr. 24, 1916)
