Born August 30, 1840 in Newcastle, OH, Milton enlisted at age 23 as a 1st SGT with Co.H of the 97th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was captured as a 2nd Lt. at the Battle of Franklin, TN on November 30, 1864. Imprisoned at POW Camp in Andersonville, GA. Milton survived Andersonville and was paroled in Vicksburg, MS at the close of the war. He also survived the explosion and sinking of the Sultana steamboat on the Mississippi River above Memphis on April 27, 1865. 1,169 died and 963 survived that maritime disaster. In October 1867, Milton married Josephine Farquhar in Newcastle, OH. Their first son William was born in March 1838. Milton moved his family to Kansas in 1870. There, Milton and Josephine had two more sons, George and Samuel, born in 1874 and 1877. Milton was an active member of the Judson Kilpatrick GAR Post 36 in Newton, KS, where he rose through the ranks from Adjutant to Post Senior Vice Commander in 1990. In 1894, Milton and family moved to Harris County Precinct 4, TX, where he resumed farming. He died in Houston on March 25, 1921. George is buried at Grandview Cemetery in Pasadena. Their two other sons returned to Kansas.
