I believe that Washington Brown and William Brown, buried in Memphis National Cemetery, are the same person. Washington Brown, the son of Joshua and Anna Brown, was born on July 13, 1843 in Hancock County, Ohio according to our family records. In the pension records for Anna Brown, he is described as age 19, 5'9", having a light complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair. He enlisted in Company "D", of the 57th OVI, on December 2, 1861 at Van Lue, Ohio. (Company "D" subsequently became Company "F").
Washington died at Adams General Hospital in Memphis, TN, on April 29 or May 5, 1863 of disease. The April date is noted in the "US Burial Registers" of 1862-1960, and also on the marker. The May 5 date, with the full name of Washington Brown, is noted in "History of Hancock County, Ohio" by Jacob Spaythe, page 296, and on the pension records. This could be the difference between actual death date and the date of notification. Also, some discrepancy would not be surprising, as he was reinterred 4 years after his death and burial. His original place of burial is not noted, but was probably at the hospital or nearby. The first burials at Memphis National Cemetery began in 1867. It was formerly known as Mississippi River Cemetery.
The Burial Registers, page 917, list W. Brown, Co. F. 57, Ohio, section 1, plot 76, which matches "History of Hancock County" page 296. When the register was updated, the plot 76 is marked out in red, and replaced with 4722, matching the findagrave plot number for William Brown. Per a cemetery rep, the sections were also renamed. Plot 4722 is now in Section H. Also, another important clue, a note is made on one of the muster rolls, it says: "Also Wm Brown."!!
Per Captain Daniel Gilbert: ".....Brown was one of my best soldiers."
