UNDERSHERIFF SHOT BY DOCTOR
Dr. Barbour Shot William Downey in Fracas Last Thursday Night
Undersheriff William H. Downey, who was shot through the stomach by Dr. J. A. Barbour, Hiawatha osteopath, in Hiawatha last Thursday night is still in the Sabetha hospital where he is yet in a grave condition. Doctors believe he has a chance to recover, altho there is still a big chance that he will die from the effects of the shooting. Barbour gave himself up to officers soon after the shooting and is now free on a $5,000 bond.
There have been two or three versions of the shooting. The cause of which seems to have been the result of an argument over Mrs. Pearl Davis, a friend of Dr. Barbour. According to Dr. Barbour and Mrs. Davis, Downey was accused of annoying Mrs. Davis, and insulting her. It was when Dr. Barbour, accompanied by Mrs. Davis, visited the Downey home late Thursday night that the shooting occurred. Barbour apparently took Downey to task over the manner in which he had treated Mrs. Davis and a quarrel ensued. The climax of the quarrel was reached when Barbour did the shooting.
According to Downey’s statement, Dr. Barbour made remarks about Miss Gertrude Fordyce, a friend of Downey, which caused the undersheriff to order him to leave. When Barbour did not leave additional remarks caused Downey to strike Barbour, knocking him down. Barbour then got up, drew a gun out of his pocket, and did the shooting so quickly that Downey had no chance to dodge.
Another witness of the shooting besides Mrs. Davis, was Roy Shelley, who seems to have accompanied the couple to the Downey home. Neither he nor Mrs. Davis were held in connection of the shooting.
Downey has been undersheriff since January 1931 when J. R. Mellenbruch became sheriff of the county. He came to Hiawatha from Everest and lives with his mother. Dr. Barbour has been in Hiawatha about ten years. According to the Hiawatha World, he and Downey both have been held in regard by Hiawatha people, and all were sorry to learn of the trouble which caused the shooting.
