MR. WINSTON
DETROIT, Mich. — Mr. Walter Winston Jr., 82, of Detroit, formerly of LaFayette, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005 in Detroit.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. at Allen Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Detroit with the Rev. Robert Holt officiating. Burial, with only family attending, will follow at New Mt. Sellers Baptist Church Cemetery in LaFayette on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
A visitation hour for family and friends in the area is scheduled Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 6 until 7 p.m. CST at Vines Funeral Home in LaFayette.
Mr. Winston is survived by three daughters, Betty (Rufus) Rodgers of Richmond, Va., Jean (Carl) Gibson of Cincinnati, Ohio and Christine Murrell of Detroit; one son, Walter R. Winston; a daughter-in-law, Kate Scott; one brother-in-law, Victor Carlisle; one sister-in-law, Jeanette (Bob) Preston of LaFayette; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Winston was a native of Chambers County. He was educated in the Chambers County Schools and later attended Tuskegee Institute for two years. Mr. Winston was then drafted into the United States Army where he received the Silver Star World War II Victory Medal. After his military duties, he began employment with Alden Nursing Home and Northville Regional Institute until retirement.
Mr. Winston was a member of the Allen Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Detroit, where he served as the church treasurer and building manager for many years. Preceding him in death were his wife, Fannie Lou Winston, and his sons, Delton Winston and Samuel Winston.
