KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
The family of a 23-year-old man who was killed Sunday at a Kansas City, Kansas, gas station is trying to find out more about his final minutes in order for police to track down his killer.

Vincent Reliford was shot in the neck outside the gas station on Parallel Parkway shortly after he made a panicked phone call. The family got a call from one of his friends 15 minutes later to say that he had been killed.

Three people were seen leaving the area in an SUV. The vehicle was later recovered in Merriam, but no arrests have been made.

The family was supposed to gather Sunday to celebrate Mother’s Day. Instead, they came to the crime scene.

“I just keep thinking about our conversations. We talked a lot and we were close,” said his mother, Kim Reliford.

“He was one of those happy-go-lucky-type of guys,” said his father, Troy Reliford. “Kind of the life-of-the-party-type of guy.”

Troy Reliford said his son called minutes before the shooting and told the family to stay at church and not go home. The family thought he might be planning something for Mother’s Day. The anticipation turned to heartbreak in a matter of minutes.

“Somewhere in my mind, I think he was trying to fix it and couldn’t,” Kim Reliford said.

The family isn’t sure exactly what he might have been trying to fix. It’s one of the many unanswered questions haunting them as they mourn.

“That was my little boy,” Kim Reliford said. “At the end of the day, I don’t care if he was 23 years old. He was still my little boy.”

The family said it’s focusing on Vincent Reliford’s 4-year-old daughter, whom he was raising.

Employees of the gas station said police came back there Tuesday evening as the investigation continues.
