His parents were Elizabeth (Huffman) Back and Henry Back of Madison County, Virginia. John's grandfathers were Harman Back of Culpeper County, Virginia, and John Huffman of Culpeper (later Madison County), Virginia.
Referred to as "John Bach" by some descendants (as seen on his gravestone), John and his immediate family never went by that surname (except his German ancestors by way of his grandfather, Harman Back).
No document recorded during his lifetime includes the spelling "Bach," however John's name was posthumously changed to Bach by a descendant in the 20th century.

Gravesite Details
Buried on their farm on Quicksand Creek, the graves of John and Catherine were originally marked by a stone sarcophagus. In 1952 the Back/Bach Genealogy Society added a modern gravestone to the site. This is not a cenotaph, nor is there one for them.
