Bernheim Arboretum designer Hubbuch dies. Clarence Edward "Buddy" Hubbuch Jr., the man who designed and landscaped the 240-acre arboretum at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, died Saturday at Norton Suburban Hospital in Jefferson County, Ky. He was 70. He retired in 1995 as director of horticulture for Bernheim, which covers parts of Bullitt and Nelson counties, after 33 years of service. He started in 1962 with 150 species of plants in the arboretum and retired with about 1,800, including one of the country's largest collections of American holly, according to a 1992 Courier-Journal story. In the same story, he said he had worked with plants all his life. He didn't even mind weeding the vegetable garden as a boy growing up in St. Matthews, he said. After making daily rounds of more than 300 acres at Bernheim, Hubbuch said he still had "a basement full of orchids and a back yard full of perennials." In the story, Hubbuch spoke humbly of his stature in local horticulture circles. Speaking of the late Fred Wiche, the popular local broadcast garden expert, he said, "Fred and I are friends, and sometimes he gets me to identify plants for him." Hubbuch was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Payne and Mary Reid; a son, Chuck Hubbuch; two sisters, Jane Hubbuch and Peggy Mullane; and a granddaughter. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Rita Catholic Church, 8709 Preston Highway, with burial in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be at Arch L. Heady & Son Okolona Funeral Home, 8519 Preston Highway, from 2 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial gifts may go to the Buddy Hubbuch Memorial Fund, started at his retirement to provide scholarships for horticulture students, in care of Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. Published in The Courier-Journal (Louisville, Kentucky ) on Nov. 6, 2000.
