RE: Alexander Mitchell Co F 101 st PA Inf
Alexander Mitchell enlisted in Carlisle September 17, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 19 as a private with Co. F, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865. I have never found his grave, and there is no obituary in any Cumberland County newspaper found in online newspaper archives. All I know is that Elizabeth applied for a widow's pension to date August 8, 1890. Although it seem logical for her to have applied shortly after her husband's death, that was not always the case.
By the way, there was also daughter Lydia E. (b. 05/29/65 - married an Orris), so Alexander and Elizabeth had a fond farewell before he left for the service.
Strangely, Woodburn Mitchell's death certificate, clearly listing Alexander and Elizabeth (Dewalt) Mitchell as his parents, claims he was born in 1881 and died in Carlisle at the age of forty-nine on April 12, 1930. The odds of there being a second Alexander & Elizabeth (Dewalt) Mitchell living in Carlisle a generation later seems a bit far fetched.
