US Presidential Science Advisor and 3rd Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy during the administration of President Ronald W. Reagan, from 1981 to 1985. He led efforts supporting President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, colloquially referred to as "Star Wars." This defense program was a five-year, $26 billion project that pursued space-based defenses to shield the United States from nuclear missile attacks. Although the initiative never extended beyond the research stage, its very existence was considered by some as one of several contributors to the end of the Cold War, due to Moscow's challenges in funding a new layer in its longstanding nuclear rivalry with the United States. Prior to being appointed to the Reagan administration, Keyworth served as director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory's Physics Division. He also served on the board of Hewlett-Packard from 1986 to 2006. On August 23, 2017, at the age of 77, Keyworth passed away at his home in Carmel, California as the result of prostate cancer.
