He married Catherine Loew in Weinbourg on 14 January 1831. The marriage record gives his occupation as farmer.
The family was recorded in the 1836 census (kept in French, although their given names were in their native German) in Weinbourg on Meyersgass road as: Jacques (farmer, 32), Catherine (37), Catherine (6), Jacob (4), and Philippe (3).
The couple had three children in Weinbourg prior to emigrating:
1. Catherine (born 29 December 1829, Weinbourg; died 12 April 1839, Weinbourg)
2. Jacob (born 1 August 1831, Weinbourg)
3. Phillip (born 3 July 1833, Weinbourg) There is no death record for him in Weinbourg, but he doesn't appear in the passenger manifest on arrival in New York.
The family arrived in the US in 1840 (passenger manifest was entered 24 June) in New York aboard the "Ontario" from Havre.
