Dutch Politician. After his father's early death due to tuberculosis, he was raised by his uncle, famous painter Johannes Bosboom. He followed military education and joined the army afterwards. In 1891, he started working in the General Staff of the army and published several military writings during this time. He retired from the army in 1912, having reached the rank of Colonel. In retirement, he was granted the rank Major General in 1913 and Lieutenant General in 1913. In the meantime, he had become involved in politics as a member of the League of Free Liberals, a classical liberal political party. He had tried to run for the House of Representatives in 1909, but failed to do so. In 1913, he was named Minister of War in Cabinet-Cort van der Linden. As World War I broke out the next year, he had a huge burden on his shoulders, only able to bear it because of the assistance of Jhr. de Jonge. He was not liked by the members of the House of Representatives, mainly because of his brusqueness and lack of communication. In 1914, he wanted to help Great Britain during World War I. However, the rest of the Dutch government wanted to remain independent, which led to a tense situation. Another conflict arose between he and Commander-in-chief Snijders. Snijders, who was pro-German and supported by Queen Wilhelmina, did not listen to the pro-British Bosboom as he felt he was only accountable to the government as a whole. In 1917, the House of Representatives adopted a motion in which they regretted his attitude with regards to mobilizing people born in 1888 rather than people born in 1898. He resigned as Minister of War and largely withdrew from public life. In 1933, he published his memoir In moeilijke omstandigheden. Augustus 1914 - mei 1917 (In Difficult Circumstances. August 1914 - May 1917). In the memoir, he pleaded for a strong defense because of Hitler's aggressive intentions and was thus one of the first Dutchmen to see the threat of Hitler.
