Joanne Marie Velasquez entered into heaven, surrounded by her loving family on February 21, 2022 in Fresno, CA after a short, but courageous battle with cancer at the age of 64. Joanne's Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday March 9, 2022 at Clovis Hills Church (10590 N Willow Ave, Clovis, CA 93619) with a viewing at 10:00 am and service at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at Clovis Cemetery and reception afterwards at Clovis Hills Church.
Joanne was born on Good Friday, April 19, 1957 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to her beloved parents, John and Joyce Velasquez. She grew up in Fresno, CA alongside her four siblings, Brothers John, Joseph and Jerry and Sister Judy. In 1975, Joanne graduated from Central High School and continued her education at Reedley College. Early in life Joanne was proud to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior and she committed her life to serving the Lord and striving to honor Him in all she did. Joanne discovered her true calling in life when she became a mother to her beloved children, Patrick Matthew, Erin Cathleene, Jeremy Michael, and Cameron John. Joanne loved her children with all her heart and she devoted her entire life to raising them.
While raising her children, Joanne earned her Bachelor's Degree and teaching credential from California State University, Fresno and went on to teach for close to 30 years. Joanne taught 2nd grade for the last 10 years of her career at Jackson Elementary before retiring in June of 2020. She loved teaching her students how to read and she taught with integrity and diligence, always giving herself fully to her students and colleagues.
Joanne found so much joy in the outdoors, she loved working in her yard and many days she would spend the whole day in her garden. Joanne was an avid walker and completed many local races and marathons with her daughter and friends. She had a special fondness for music, she loved listening to John Denver, Simon and Garfunkel and James Taylor. Joanne loved spending time with her family, especially enjoying visits with her parents and siblings. Joanne was a wonderful aunt to many nieces and nephews, always making time to celebrate them at parties and family functions. Family always came first to Joanne - never herself, but her family - always. Many knew Joanne as a close and special friend as she was trustworthy and empathetic with a listening ear. Joanne was overjoyed when Erin and Jeremy married their spouses, Justin and Heather. She was a loving mother-in-law and treated Justin and Heather with the same love and compassion as her own children. Joanne's grandchildren lovingly knew her as Nana and Nanny. Each grandchild adored Joanne and loved the time they spent playing at her house, singing songs, learning how to garden, and celebrating birthdays and events together. Joanne's grandchildren were each a special joy and blessing to her. Joanne was such a bright light and loving presence in this world, there are no words to describe how greatly she will be missed.
Joanne was preceded in death by her son, Patrick Matthew Steele. She is survived by her parents John and Joyce Velasquez, Her children Erin and her husband Justin Shannon, Jeremy and his wife Heather Steele, Cameron Velasquez, her siblings John and his wife Paulette Velasquez, Joseph and his wife Jodie Velasquez, Jerry Velasquez, Judith Anne and her husband Domenico Santeufemia, her grandchildren Aubrey Joy and her husband Chrystian Pena, Ethan Jeffrey and Tyler Patrick Shannon, Patrick John and Jonah Eli Steele, in addition to numerous beloved cousins and close friends.
