Member of the 3d battalion of New York Artillery, Company E.

On June 9, 1863, at Fort Lyon, VA, twenty six men and a lieutenant were detailed to remove powder from some shells on June 9, 1863. Just after 2:00 p.m. an explosion occurred which was probably caused by the carelessness by the men.

Twenty were killed outright. Three others later died. They are all buried in a row in the Alexandria National Cemetery, Section A, graves 818 to 838. On June 15th, a mortally wounded victim died and is buried in 842. The last victim died on August 11th and is buried in plot 923.

President Lincoln, Secretary Stanton and Gen. Samuel Hintzelman, visited the fort on June 10th.
