Medora Elizabeth Richardson was born on property belonging to Mother A.M.E. Zion church, located at that time at West 10th and Bleecker street - in Manhatten.
Medora's grandfather, John Richardson, loaned the largest amount to build the church with an adjoining house where her family lived for 26 years .
Her mother, Josephine Pernell Richardson, had also been born on Zion Church property when that church was at Church and Leonard streets. The Pernell family was closely connected with the growth of Zion Church in New York.
Medora was musically talented as a pianist, graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music. She had been a student at Livingstone College at Salisbury, North Carolina. She was actively involved with the church choir and in planning concerts, enlisting the support of some of the best artists of both races.
She was buried in Cypress Hill cemetery where her grandparents and other relatives are buried.
