Prof. Anderson was associated with Missouri Botanical Garden and Washington University, St Louis for 40 years, having been Curator of Useful Plants since 1957 and director of the garden for three years prior to that. He was known for his evolutionary studies, many of which were considered breakthroughs in the scientific world. Associates say he was one of the top 50 American botanists of his time. He published many articles ranging from the very technical to those that could be understood by the average person. One of his books, "Plants, Man, and Life" was among the best selling scientific works on the market at the time (1952) and is still available (a new edition was reprinted on the 100th anniversary of his birth). Some references give his birth date as 9 November 1897, others as 11 September 1897. He was survived by his wife Dorothy and his daughter Phoebe.
