Daniel Hollinger was born in the small village of Schonenberg in what was at that time the Kingdom of Bavaria, but is now part of the Rhineland Palatinate. He was baptized on October 11, 1825 in Obermiesau, about five kilometers from Schonenberg. As a young man, he immigrated to Ontario, initially living in Waterloo County with his family. About the time of his marriage to Eva Simon, in the early 1850's, he purchased land in Normanby Township, Grey County, where they built their home. Their daughter Catharina was born here in 1855. That same year, Daniel donated one acre of land for the cemetery he would later be buried in. His was the second burial in Saint Pauls Lutheran Cemetery in Normanby.

In 1984, a plaque was erected near the cemetery gates: "In memory of Dan Hollinger who donated one acre of land for the cemetery in 1855".
