Bertie William Hayes was born in 1899 in Fareham. He was the 7th and final child of John Hayes IV and Maria Elizabeth Hayes. He lost his mother in 1902 and was therefore raised primarily by his father and his stepmother Sophie. Growing up at the turn of the century, Bertie wouldve witnessed the transition of Victorian standards from one century to the next. He was friends with the Yardley family which had an intimate relationship with the Hayes. When the First World War erupted in August 1914, Bertie wanted to enlist as his older brothers Charles, Walter and Arthur were all going off to fight but due to Bertie's age he had to wait.

Bertie formally enlisted into the Royal Navy with a dream to serve on the Dreadnoughts on the 6 Feb 1917. Bertie would serve on HMS Victory I (Light Cruiser), patrolling home waters and escorting cargo vessels.

Bertie's wartime military service was cut short by the armistice in November of 1918, but he would serve on in the navy until December of 1928. A little consolation for all of this was the return of his brother's Walter and Arthur from theatres around the world.

Post war life brought marriage for Bertie as around 1924, he married Hilda May Hayes (nee Walker) who was born in 1901. Together her and Bertie brought 2 kids to life, Vivian Hayes (1925-2002) and Kenneth Edward Hayes (1927-2009). Bertie's brother Arthur died by his own hand in 1947. His stepmother had died in 1944.

Bertie himself would pass away in Portsmouth in 1954, his widow would die in 1983.

R.I.P Uncle Bertie, may you forever rest in peace.
