On Monday, the 21st of December 1885, Mrs. Christina Hahnenkratt, departed this life at the home of Mr. Henry Hahnen. She was the mother of Messrs. Jacob and Henry Hahnen, and reached the age of 80 years, 6 months and 24 days.
Mrs. Hahnen, came to America in 1854 from Wuerttemberg, Germany, as a widow with her five children. In 1858, after a four year sojourn at Lafayette, In., she moved to Des Moines. Until a few months ago she was physically and mentally well, and very active. In May of this year she celebrated in the circle of her relatives, her 80th birthday. We attended that and reported that in our paper at that time. It was a very fine family gathering and festival, and the good lady seemed so well that we expressed the wish that she may celebrate her 100th birthday.
Since several weeks she has been ailing and had just the one wish, that she may soon depart. In the night of Dec. 20th to 21st, she departed this life.
She is survived by four children, to-wit: The Messrs. Henry Hahnen of Des Moines; Jacob Hahnen of Pierre, Dakota; John Hahnen of Galena, Kansas, and Mrs. List of Wilton, Iowa.
The funeral services took place on Tuesday afternoon, Pastor A. Kleinlein officiated at the home and the Lutheran church, and at the grave.
Among the relatives from away who attended her last rites were Mrs. J. A. List, of Wilton, Iowa, a daughter, and Paulus List of Waverly, a grandson.
As an old pioneer among the German people of this city, Mrs. Hahnenkratt, was well acquainted and beloved.
(Translated from a German newspaper article - Des Moines, Iowa by Clara Duerschner, Waseca, Minnesota, January 26, 1951. Clara notes that the account gives her name both ways, Hahnen and Hahnenkratt.)
