Mrs. M.O. Barnes.
Mary A. Kelley was born in Pulaska county, Kentucky, September 16th, 1838. She died in Elk City, Kans., at her home, Aug. 16th, 1900 - Aged 62 years, 11 months. She was reared to young womanhood among her native hills and here met and wedded M.O. Barnes over 40 years ago. Children were born to this union. During these early days of her married life she endured the anxiety and hardships common to a soldiers wife.
After the war when the migratory spirit seized the people of Kentucky, for Kansas they moved west. About 30 years ago Mrs. Barnes was introduced to frontier life. Other children were born in the west, until five children, 4 boys and 1 girl came to gladden the home. One boy died in Kentucky and the daughter left for brighter shores about 5 years ago.
Sister Barnes was converted after she came to Kansas and joined the M.E. church, in which church she lived until about 7 years ago when she found a home in the Friends church. In this church she often occupied the pulpit and preached a full gospel. Nearly 19 years ago she consecrated her all in the Lord and was wonderfully blessed. Ever since that time her Christian life has been above reproach. Dorcas like she did much good and then arose many to bless her. Since this ripe Christian experience came to Mrs. Barnes she has been a glowing enthusiastic Christian worker. Few conversed with her long till she told them of her Lord Master. For five years she had been a great sufferer from a cancer but in the midst of it all she manifested the high Christians faith. For two days she drifted out and finally passed over last Thursday.
The funeral was conducted at the M.E. church by Rev. McFarland assisted by Revs. Kauffman and Powell. She leaves a husband and three sons with other relatives to mourn their loss. Two of these sons - Frank and Charley live here. Sherman - a minister of the M.E. church of the St. Louis Conference, lives at Vandalia, Mo. Mr. T.M. Kelly, a brother, came in from Udall, Kansas. We extend our sympathy to these bereaved ones for their loss is great.
