RUTH D. QUIGLEY, 81, passed away January 12, 2003, in Oakland after a brief illness. She was preceded in death in 1997 by her husband of 49 years, Donald A. Quigley. She is survived by sons Dan Quigley of San Francisco, and Howard Quigley of Bozeman, Montana; daughter Joyce Rucker of Divide, Colorado, and grandchildren Jennifer Bonnell, Andrea Rucker, Brian Rucker, and Allyson Quigley. Mrs. Quigley was born Ruth Dale Young on January 21, 1921, in Wilsonville, Oregon, where her pioneer ancestors had settled in the mid-19th century. She was the third of four children, and lived and worked on the family farm until attending Oregon State University, where she graduated in 1943 with a degree in Home Economics and Child Development. A lifetime member of the OSU Alumni Association, her father and three siblings attended and graduated from the University as well. She moved to Oakland in 1944, met Donald in 1946, and they were married in 1947. Mrs. Quigley was part of a co-op that started the Tiny Tots Nursery School in Oakland in the early 1950s. She was active in PTA as her children attended Oakland Public Schools, and she was an integral part of the success of the company that Donald co-founded, Continental Plating, a metal finishing company. A resident of Oakland for nearly 59 years, Mrs. Quigley was a former president of the Lakeview Women's Club and an avid bridge player, and she loved to garden and entertain in her home. Her organizational skills were valuable, whether managing the home office for Continental Plating, leading PTA and club activities, or hosting large family gatherings. She will be fondly remembered by her children, family, and friends for the welcoming home that she and her husband created for all visitors at all times. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at the family residence on Saturday, January 25, 2003, at 2 p.m. Mrs. Quigley will be interred along with her husband in Pleasant Hill cemetery outside Wilsonville, Oregon. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Oakland Public Library, 721 Washington St., Oakland, CA 94607, or the charity of your choice.
